Houston Community College (HCC) is now home to the David E. Brauer collection of art and art history books. The well-known historian, lecturer and collector of British Pop Art, made the decision to bequeath his collection of approximately 10,000 books to HCC before his death last fall.

The challenge was clear-cut: Apply your creativity and ingenuity to showcase an app idea to address a specifically designed challenge. The more than 50 students who participated in the daylong competition known as App-a-thon@HCC on Nov. 14 embraced the challenge, showcasing eight innovative app ideas to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

Houston Community College (HCC) songwriting instructor and two-time Dove Award winner V. Michael McKay may have inspired gospel audiences for almost 50 years, but this is the first time a student says he has helped find her “flow and rhythm” without seeing his face and from across state lines. Because of COVID-19, all of McKay’s students are taking his classes online, instead of the classroom, but sophomore Jasmine Jemison is learning from her home in Little Rock, AK.

Houston Community College’s Center for Entrepreneurship is now the Glenda & David Regenbaum Center for Entrepreneurship at Northwest College. This past April Glenda and David Regenbaum generously donated $100,000 to the Center to support entrepreneurial initiatives to help educate and nurture the growth of small businesses. The center is located at HCC Northwest Alief Hayes campus in West Houston.

EduMed.org has ranked HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences as one of the Best Online Medical Assistant Programs in the country. Using the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), EduMed.org’s Best in 2020 rankings placed Coleman second among the programs named as best for online learning in health care.

Today, Connect Community, a local non-profit organization, launched the Sewn Goods Collaborative to protect our public workers, local businesses, and residents during the COVID-19 crisis. This collaborative was launched in tandem with Houston Community College, Houston Furniture Bank, and several small-batch manufacturers, non-profits and local sewists to create a partnership to better serve the Greater Houston community.

Great Value Colleges has named Houston Community College’s IDEAStudio as one of its top 50 Best Maker Spaces. IDEAStudio is housed at HCC’s West Houston Institute (WHI), located on the Alief Hayes campus. The studio’s name is an acronym for Innovation, Design Entrepreneurship, Arts & Sciences, and for the past two years has served students and faculty using both traditional and cutting-edge technologies.

Student and staff volunteers provided food for more than 200 people at the Eagle Strong Community Food Fair, Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Alief Hayes campus.
