Five HCC Northwest students won the All Texas Academic Team Awards from Phi Theta Kappa. These awards are merit based on accomplishments while while students pursue an associate degree or workforce pathway. According to PTK, judging criteria includes academic excellence and intellectual rigor; leadership and service; and how a student has extended his/her education to benefit society. The HCC NW students who applied for and were accepted to the All USA Academic Team were automatically placed on the Texas team.
Dr. Gisela “Bennie” Ables, PTK adviser for Northwest and Southeast Colleges could nominate two students for each Northwest campus. PTK invites students nationwide to apply for the scholarship. “The application is challenging and while many of our students attempt it, they often do not finish the process,” said Dr. Ables.
The following Northwest students were accepted on the merit of their application: Alief-Hayes Campus - Kiara Saravia Alvarez and Joshua Lemis; Katy Campus - Sakendra Dennis; Spring Branch - Stacie Herrington and Thi Anh Thu.
Students are recognized at the annual American Association of Community Colleges Convention or the Association of Community College Trustees’ Congress.
