HCC Bluebonnet Applied Technology Center hosts an open house at Southwest College

The Houston Community College Bluebonnet Applied Technology Center hosted an open house on Tuesday for the public and local businesses to see first hand how HCC prepares students to enter the workforce trained and certified.

Director of Construction Trades and School of Continuing Education, Tom Tynan gave tours covering various sections of the campus including: electrical, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and welding training centers. During the tour Tynan said there is a demand for workforce specific jobs in Houston, and the Bluebonnet Applied Technology Center should be the link between employers and skilled laborers.

Suloy Contreras, a student enrolled in the welding program at HCC Southwest, was in training as Tynan gave one of the tours. She transferred from San Jacinto Community College after hearing about the high income associated with being a certified welder. She shared her story.

"I have male friends that are in this field," Contreras said. "They told me about the pay. They said you should try it out. I went from there. I talked to the college. I thought it was great. Now I’m here."
