HCC Coleman College at Midtown Healthcare Programs Fair
Houston Community College (HCC) Coleman College for Health Sciences opened its new Midtown location on Aug. 19 with a strong enrollment of 433 students.
“We’re excited to open our location in Midtown and offer pre-healthcare courses in the evenings and weekends,” said Dr. Lutricia Harrison, interim president of HCC Coleman College, “but judging by our enrollment numbers, students are even more excited.”
Located at 3100 Main St., the college offers pre-healthcare courses on evenings and weekends for working students interested in medical careers.
“Most professional healthcare programs require prerequisite courses, such as English, Biology and Medical Terminology, so we decided to offer more of these during off business hours,” Dr. Harrison said.
When HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D., challenged the college in June to expand its offerings at a new location, HCC Coleman College shifted into high gear to open classes within nine weeks. Classes at 3100 Main St. began on the first day of the fall semester.
“We could have offered more prerequisite courses in the evenings and weekends at our existing location in the Texas Medical Center, but we did not want our pre-healthcare students to pay for parking,” Dr. Harrison said. “That’s when our chancellor suggested the HCC administration building in Midtown.”
Not only did the existing HCC building offer a free parking garage and immediate access to the Metro rail, but it also came equipped with smart conference rooms on the second floor and a basement full of classrooms and offices.
“Some of our classes, such as Algebra, Anatomy and Physiology, and Introduction to Health Professions, filled up quickly,” Dr. Harrison said. “Because we opened our Midtown location in record time, we never imagined we would have more than 400 students enrolled before our first class was held.”
“It just shows that many people are interested in starting their path to a healthcare career when the classes are conveniently scheduled and located,” she added.
An advisor is available at Midtown on weeknights and soon on Saturday mornings to ensure students can explore the healthcare career curriculum available at HCC Coleman College in the Texas Medical Center and take the appropriate prerequisite courses for their program.
“HCC is always listening to our students and finding ways to make their educational experience more convenient and enjoyable,” said Dr. Ford Fisher. “Opening classes at 3100 Main St. with free parking and evening and weekend classes made good sense.”
HCC Coleman College at Midtown operates from 4-10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on weekends.
