HCC North Forest Campus commemorates Black History Month

In commemoration of Black History Month, Houston Community College Northeast North Forest Campus hosted Sherrika Hunt for a talk on her new book entitled “Smiling Through My Tears.” Students, staff and faculty heard Hunt share her own personal story of dealing with grief from the loss of several family members.

The group was able to hear how she used her own experiences to help others to overcome obstacles. This message is especially meaningful to students who may experience challenges in the process of pursuing their educational goals.

Hunt attributes her faith in playing a major role in helping her to get through her grief and find hope in the future. Hunt adds, “Over the last few years, death has visited several family members, including my mother, father, and oldest brother. Their deaths left me hurt, angry, and disappointed, but I can move on, knowing I will survive.”

At the talk, students all received a copy of Hunt’s book and were treated to a luncheon featuring traditional foods from the African American culture hosted by the Office of Student Life.

HCC Northeast North Forest Campus offers a variety of services to support students in their educational endeavors including counseling and advising services. The campus also offers academic and workforce course opportunities for students. Currently the North Forest Campus is wrapping up an expansion project, which will allow additional programs to be offered including programs in automotive technology, plumbing, machining and welding.
