HCC hosts Fab Lab Symposium at new West Houston Institute

Houston Community College recently hosted the United States Fab Lab Network's (USFLN) Annual Symposium at the new West Houston Institute.
The focus of the event was centered on educational best practices (K-12 & Post-Secondary), entrepreneurship, and Fab Lab/Makerspace start-up – operations and training.
The symposium also featured various equipment vendors, who displayed a variety of Fab Lab/Makerspace gear and provided training sessions.
The featured speakers at the symposium included:
- Steven González - 27-year aerospace industry veteran Associate Manager of the Strategic Partnership Office at the NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC), who spoke on "NASA – Fabricating Our Way To Mars
- Gary Schoeniger - renowned entrepreneurship educator and Founder/CEO of the Entrepreneurial Learning Initiative
- Jeff Reichman - founder of January Advisors, a data science consulting firm that works with nonprofits and governments. Reichman is also the founder of Sketch City, a community of 2,800+ people who collaborate on tech projects for the public good. During Hurricane Harvey, the Sketch City community-built apps, maps, and text bots to help people find shelter and support
- Dr. Matthew Wettergreen - lecturer at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen and design course educator who provides education via hands-on workshops and formal courses that teach students how to manufacture prototypes via low fidelity prototyping, iterative design, and the use of advanced manufacturing tools to produce high quality functioning devices
- Dr. Kurt Ewen – HCC Vice Chancellor of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness
