Voter Registration

Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, voting is a fundamental right for all American citizens. It’s one of democracy's most precious gifts.

With this being a Presidential Election year, the Houston Community College (HCC) Southwest Student Government Association teamed up with Neighborhood Centers to host a voter’s registration drive to prepare faculty, staff, students and community members for the upcoming election.

“I’m registering to vote because my parents came to America for a better life,” HCC student Michelle Escobar said. “They made a lot of sacrifices and have worked too hard for me not to vote. I don’t agree with a lot of the candidates this election cycle, but I want to make sure my voice is heard.”

Many people stopped by the voter’s registration table because they wanted to fulfill their civic duty. Being a registered voter gives everyone the opportunity to make a difference.

HCC student Shawn Charles said, “I hear a lot of young people my age say their vote won’t matter, however I see it differently, one vote can make all the difference.”

For those not born in the United States, getting the word out about the importance of voting is a personal mission.

“As an immigrant woman, I encourage all those who have the capacity to become U.S. citizens to participate actively in the election process,” Neighborhood Centers Community Developer Ana Mac Naught said. “As part of Neighborhood Centers, we recognize the importance of providing our neighbors with opportunities for engagement to empower them to achieve full civic participation and become leaders who transform their communities for good.”

Over a two-day period, 29 new voters were registered and will be able to participate in the upcoming November election.
