HCC nursing program looks to the future

Oct 4, 2016

The demand for nurses has never been higher, and Houston Community College (HCC) is prepared to expand its contribution to this vital sector of the workforce. Over the last three years, HCC students have joined with faculty and administration in a focus on excellence in their work towards the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX). This has led to rising annual first attempt pass rates with the current year average rate of 80.4 percent. This meets the accreditation requirement of 80 percent.

“I want to thank the students, faculty and administration at Coleman College for their dedication to making this the best nursing program possible,” said Dr. Cesar Maldonado, Chancellor, Houston Community College. “We take the job of educating the next generation of nurses very seriously and feel privileged to be part of shaping their professional future.”

HCC has been accepting applications for the nursing program since April 2016 and expects to enroll approximately sixty students in the Spring 2017 semester.

“We are very pleased at the outcome of the recent NCLEX,” said Dr. Phillip Nicotera, President, HCC Coleman College. “We have every confidence that HCC will provide the Greater Houston Area with highly qualified nursing professionals.”

Construction is underway for a new 10-story building across the street from the existing campus in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, which will more than double its size. The new facility will offer 248,000 additional square feet of classrooms. There will be expanded space for the current nursing program, plus space for new partnerships for students to earn a Baccalaureate in Nursing degree, and additional simulation space for other healthcare fields. The building is scheduled to open in August 2017.
