HCC Alumni Association adopts new program to help students in need

Miguel Posada’s (pictured 4th from the left) life changed forever when he lost his sister in a car accident. The Houston Community College student instantly became a parent to her two children.

At the age of 24, Posada is pursuing his Associate Degree in Nursing at Coleman College for Health Sciences with the help of the Hank Coleman Scholarship through the HCC Foundation. Along with taking classes, Posada works two jobs to provide for his niece and nephew, but there wasn’t enough money to get them gifts or decorations for Christmas.

The HCC Alumni Association heard about his story of personal loss and hardship and raised more than $800 in gift cards along with a holiday meal donated by The French Corner.

“It’s all about us giving back to the community we serve,” said Zandra Henderson, alumni specialist. “This was a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the life of an HCC student and a future alumnus.”

Posada’s story has touched so many that the HCC Alumni Association is starting the Adopt a Student program. Plans are already underway to help more families next holiday season. Long-term, the association hopes to raise enough support to establish an emergency assistance fund for HCC alumni and students to help throughout the year.

“I just want to thank you so much for the happiness you all brought to my nephew and niece for Christmas,” said Posada. “It was priceless to see the kids with big smiles on their faces. Thank you so much for the great things you do!”

Once he graduates from HCC, Posada plans to pursue his Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
