Students roll up sleeves to target food insecurity at HCC Stafford Campus

A light bulb went off when students in Intensive English at HCC Stafford campus read about the impact of food insecurity on college students. They rolled up their sleeves to get involved. With the support of the Office of Student Life at Southwest College, they gave away fresh fruit to students during the last week of classes (April 30).

Last year, the Intensive English students collected canned goods for the HCC Hunger Games and donated lunch to the clients who visit SEARCH Homeless Services in Houston. Meanwhile, plans are under way to open a food pantry at the HCC Stafford campus.

“Our students enjoy giving and feeling they are part of a community, so these service projects are meaningful to them,” said Gisele Medina, who teaches Intensive English at HCC Southwest College. “These are students that come from all over the world and want to give back to their host country.”
