HCC Northeast College celebrates Juneteenth at annual parade

Houston Community College celebrated Juneteenth by participating in Mayor Sylvester Turner's Annual Juneteenth Parade. The parade draws hundreds of people from Acres Homes and surrounding communities and commemorates the day that slaves in Galveston learned of their freedom through the Emancipation Proclamation.

HCC was well represented with two parade entries and plenty of volunteers promoting the college and it programs as they distributed giveaways along the route. HCC Board Chair Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, District IV and Trustee Eva Loredo District VIII joined Northeast College staff and fire academy cadets on the parade float while President Dr. Monique Umphrey greeted the crowd atop the HCC fire truck.

“As Houston’s Community College, we are proud and honored to be able to participate in the Acres Home Juneteenth celebration,” said Dr. Umphrey. “HCC recognizes the importance of the collective celebration of Juneteenth which provides us with an opportunity to honor the importance of emancipation and come together as a community.”

The parade provided an opportunity for area businesses, government agencies, community and civic groups, elected officials, schools, and HCC to showcase the best of Acres Homes and surrounding communities. The event has seen a steady increase in both parade entries and crowd attendance, nearly doubling in size this year. HCC’s participation strengthens its partnership with the Acres Homes community and brings recognition to the campus located there.
