HCC to help redesign college history courses

Houston Community College has been selected to help evaluate and substantially revise introductory history courses at colleges throughout the United States.

The project, “History Gateways,” is being funded by a $1.65 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the American Historical Association. The AHA will work with faculty from HCC and several other colleges to rework introductory history courses to better serve students from all backgrounds and to align the curricula with the future needs of an increasingly complex society.

HCC history faculty involved in this program are Theresa Jach, Kent McGaughy, and Nicholas Cox.

In addition to HCC, colleges taking part in the project include the University of Houston, University of Houston-Downtown, Texas Southern University and several other institutions in New York and Chicago.

“History Gateways” will launch in January 2019 and will continue for four years.
