HCC Texas A&M Chevron Academy creates unique opportunity for engineering students

Houston Community College offers engineering students an outstanding and cost-saving opportunity to begin a four-year degree program through its Texas A&M-Chevron Engineering Academy.

The academy provides Texas A&M engineering courses for freshman and sophomore students, who move seamlessly to A&M for their junior and senior years. The savings for these students can amount to tens of thousands of dollars.

“They are simultaneously Texas A&M students and HCC students,” says John Vasselli, HCC dean of engineering. “They take A&M courses taught by A&M faculty at the academy at HCC’s Spring Branch Campus.”

Engineering students can apply to HCC in January.  Those students who pass a pre-screening process are contacted by Texas A&M and apply for the academy.  Once accepted into the program, they take on the dual role of HCC and A&M students.

“Because they are A&M students, they have all the benefits provided by the university,” Vasselli says.  “They go to football games, they go to job fairs.  We have them at the A&M campus often.”
