Dear Neighbors,

I need to bring to your attention an urgent matter – the on-going Airbag Recall. It is the largest and most complex recall in U.S. history. This is a very serious matter considering it applies to hundreds of thousands of vehicles in Houston, and these defective inflators can explode during deployment, blasting shrapnel into the passenger compartment. Several serious injuries and deaths occurred, including two in Houston, because of defective airbag inflators in certain types of vehicles.

I am honored to join the coalition of Airbag Recall: Houston, and I am proud that Houston Community College’s Southwest College is partnering to host a series of Safety Awareness events.

These events will educate our students, faculty, staff and community members about this important airbag recall, as well as show them what steps to take to see if they are at risk. They also can prevent injuries or harm by checking their vehicle identification number at www.AirbagRecall.com.

There are two important bond updates to share for HCC District VII. First, our Missouri City Campus is making great strides toward completion. Once opened, it will serve as HCC’s Center for Entrepreneurship, Technology and Health. The $21,500,000 investment includes construction of a new 69,340 square-foot facility. Among its numerous features are: modern classrooms, state-of-the-art labs and exhibition space; as well as expanded parking for the campus.

‌Second, the West Houston Institute at our Alief-Hayes campus, an ultramodern science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) facility, is set for completion in early 2017. The $45,750,000 location will host HCC’s Center for Entrepreneurship and provide a massive 111,862 square feet dedicated to project-based learning and product development. Many of the labs, “maker-spaces” and assembly areas are open for community use to foster entrepreneurship and design.

As one of the largest academic institutions in the country, HCC has a responsibility to be innovative and thoughtful as we create pathways to success for all our students. It is our honor to be considered Houston’s Community College.
