Spring 2017 Newsletter from Trustee Eva Loredo

Dear Neighbors,

As the new Chair of the Houston Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees, it is my honor and privilege to serve our community. I am committed to generating student success by supporting our faculty, staff and students and bringing in additional partnerships with regional businesses to create the ultimate student experience.

As your trustee, it’s my duty to ensure HCC is a good steward of the resources we entrust to them. I serve because I believe HCC is one of the most valuable educational and workforce development resources in the Greater Houston region.

In the past year, I worked for all HCC libraries to be open on the weekends. Doing so provides critical access to technology and resources our community needs for academic advancement, job searches and personal growth.

As Houston’s Community College, we want to ensure your investment and your trust is multiplied. I’m pleased to report HCC is providing an excellent return on our community’s investments. We are making sound financial decisions that have a profound impact on the communities we serve.

A recent national assessment calculated that HCC generates a total economic impact of $4.1 billion in total added income for the regional economy. And, last year, HCC alumni added 38,801 jobs to the region, with an annual income of $3.6 billion. This economic boost is similar to hosting the Super Bowl 15 times.

In addition to the return on financial investment, HCC has been instrumental in propelling a multitude of students to personal and professional triumph. And through HCC’s transformation process, these numbers will grow in the years to come.

These exceptional students need your help to thrive and obtain their goals. In the 2015-2016 school year, 1,085 of our students received $1,251,644 in scholarships from the HCC Foundation. For many students, these scholarships are the only reason they could afford a college education.

The HCC Foundation plays a critical role in providing pathways to success for our students. It provides numerous opportunities for giving and I welcome your personal and corporate involvement.

Today, I invite you to help the Foundation achieve its ambitious goal of funding $3 million in scholarships and awards by the year 2020. The numbers show an investment in a scholarship for an HCC student is fiscally sound.

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we ARE Houston’s Community College.

In service,

Eva Loredo
HCC Board of Trustees
Chair, District VIII
