HCC to partner with UH on Mars project

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages that humankind wants to undertake.

NASA promises that one of the first voyages of humans to other planets, which many generations of people have dreamed of, will be a manned mission to Mars.

In the 2030s, NASA plans to send humans to the Red Planet; and this academic year, the University of Houston and Houston Community College begin working together on the Mars project that will help with getting ready for manned missions to Mars.

The Mars project involves a design of a real-size mock-up/model of a Mars surface habitat and other additional facilities for the manned missions to Mars. The model of the habitat will be built and displayed at the HCC West Houston Institute. It will support investigations that astronauts will do on Mars in order to find answers to important questions about past and present life on Mars, water on Mars, geology of Mars, physics and chemistry of Mars, support for human life on Mars and colonization of Mars in the future.

Students who major in sciences are welcome to participate in the project. The project will also include activities engaging students who major in engineering, computer sciences, health sciences, social sciences and English language. The project’s experiences will help students better understand and appreciate what it takes to become the Martian.
