Spring 2016 Newsletter from Trustee Zeph Capo
May 26, 2016
Dear Neighbors,
As your trustee, it is my honor to represent a district that is seeing consistent growth academically and structurally. The transformation of Houston Community College is something that we, the HCC Board of Trustees, have encouraged and embraced. We recognize that we must change, like all organizations to continue to meet the needs and demands of our diverse constituents. Great things are happening across the HCC district:
- We recently celebrated the grand opening of the HCC Business Center of Excellence, which is already receiving accolades and recognition for its exemplary faculty and staff. The Accounting, Business Administration, Business Technology, International Business, and Marketing programs have been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Associate Degree Board of Commissioners. HCC is one of only three community colleges in Texas and the only community college in the Gulf Coast Region to have this prestigious accreditation.
- Students and staff are now enjoying the extra parking spaces at our Northline campus. The new parking garage is up and running and crews have started construction on the new instructional building. • These facilities will share land with the new North Houston Early College High School that is currently under construction. Through our partnership with the Houston Independent School District (HISD), students will have a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree from HCC when they graduate. Proximity to HCC and METRO rail line gives them a real advantage.
- It will soon be less challenging for all high school students to get a head start on college. Starting this fall, qualified, motivated students in grades 9-12 can enroll in our Dual Credit program at no cost. HCC has eliminated the out- of-district fees.
- I am happy to say that HCC will continue to serve students at our Pinemont campus for another two years. This is good news for those who attend classes at the campus; however, I invite you to share your thoughts about how we might improve programs and services as we move ahead You can do so by posting to the comments thread below.
HCC is making access to higher education easier than ever. We could not achieve this greatness without your support and trust. We are Houston’s Community College.
In service,
Zeph Capo
