Spring 2016 Newsletter from Trustee Chair Adriana Tamez
Apr 29, 2016
Dear Neighbors,
As I shared in my State of the College Address to more than 750 att endees, I am proud of this college for how it has transformed the way our students access education and for the success we continue to help so many achieve. That is why we do this – to help our students succeed! I am also proud of the leadership and vision Chancellor Maldonado has provided the college through his strong work with the board.
We continue to do great things across the college, and especially in our district. We are making great progress in so many areas that are important to our students, especially in the area of workforce education and training. In our district, we are building, adding and changing programs to bett er prepare our students.
And all across HCC, we are succeeding:
- We rank number one in awarding Associate Degrees to all minorities.
- We rank second in awarding Associate Degrees to our Hispanic and African American students, fifth for Asian America students, and fourth in all disciplines.
- We have completed 10 ground breaking events for our Capital Improvement Projects and have had our first Ribbon Cutting to open the Alief-Hayes facility. More are on the way. Our partnerships are strong.
- Under my chairmanship, the Mexican Consulate gave HCC the largest gift ever given to an education institution to ensure scholarships for students.
- The US Department of Labor awarded HCC $4.2 million to fund apprenticeship programs in healthcare, IT and plumbing occupations.
- The Robert Garner Firefighter Foundation has pledged $7.5 million to support students being trained at HCC’s Firefighter Academy
- We continue to build "engineer focused" partnerships with Texas A&M University and the University of Texas-Tyler.
- In the fall, all students in the greater Houston area will be able to take Dual Credit courses at HCC for no cost. This is a game changer!
Student success remains our focus.
Success happens every day at HCC. I continue to be amazed at the level of teaching in our academic and workforce programs. Our students are prepared for what is next!
Please let me know how we can continue to support our community and to help our students achieve their desired future! I am here for you; please let me hear from you.
In Service,
Adriana Tamez
