The Houston Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees has new officers. During a special meeting held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, board members voted to select Dr. Adriana Tamez as Chairman. Trustee Tamez previously held the title of secretary and will be sworn in on January 21 to serve her first full term as trustee for District III. Trustee Tamez is a longtime educator who is dedicated to educating and empowering individuals and communities.

“I am honored and humbled to serve as board chairperson—an honor I take quite seriously. The opportunity to work with the board, individuals who I hold in highest regard, to create a collegial, collaborative and effective HCC student-focused governing body is exciting. We bring to the table a wealth of experiences, talents, and interests; it is this diversity, which I believe is our greatest strength,” said Tamez.

The Board unanimously selected Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz as Secretary. Trustee Evans-Shabazz represents District IV and will be sworn in on January 21 to serve a two-year unfinished term. The native Houstonian comes from an impressive line of educators and believes education is the centerpiece of the American Dream.

“I’m humbled and elated to become a part of the Executive Committee and look forward to working with the trustees and chancellor to bring the HCC way to fruition,” said Evans-Shabazz.

Trustee Robert Glaser will keep his position as Vice Chairman. Glaser is a native Houstonian and businessman who represents District V. Trustee Glaser believes that a sound educational institution is built on sound financial footings.

“I thank my fellow board members for their continued confidence in electing me for a second term as their Vice Chair and for a third consecutive term as a board officer. I look forward to working with my fellow board officers and other board members, along with the administration, in continuing the process of making HCC the best educational opportunity for our region, reflecting the diverse composition of our service area. I will remain active engaging the neighborhoods and communities of my district, while continuing my efforts as a fierce advocate for both educational opportunities for all segments of our community as well as a prudent steward of resources for taxpayers,” said Glaser.

Departing Board Chair Zeph Capo, in congratulating Trustee Tamez said, "I am confident the new officers will continue the important work of turning our college around and making it the premier choice for educating our workforce. It was my humble privilege to lead the board in 2015 and I stand ready to support our new chair."

Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC chancellor thanked the outgoing board leadership for their service.

“We have accomplished many things during this past year with Trustee Capo as Chair. I thank him for his commitment and hard work. As we transition to new board leadership, I look forward to working with Board Chair Tamez and the entire board to further define Houston Community College as a national model for delivering qualified, capable candidates to the workforce or on to higher educational pursuits."
