HCC Southwest Interim President named one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2015

Houston Woman Magazine selected Houston Community College (HCC) Southwest Interim President Dr. Madeline Burillo as one of “Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2015” and is featuring her in its annual keepsake edition.

A festive afternoon tea to honor and connect the “50 Women” was attended by 260 invited guests. The event, co-hosted by Houston Woman Magazine and Chevron, took place at La Colombe d’Or Mansion in Houston. Dr. Burillo received recognition for her contributions to the community and her commitment to education.

“Those selected as Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2015 are individuals with vast networks of social and professional connections,” Houston Woman Magazine Publisher Beverly Denver said. “They have earned an enviable reputation for their expertise in a particular field or arena. They are knowledgeable, credible and trustworthy. The thoughts and actions of these women influence the thoughts and actions of others. It is our distinct pleasure to introduce these remarkable women to our readers and to others in our community.”

Dr. Burillo has played an integral role in the growth of HCC as the college undergoes the transformation process rolled out by HCC Chancellor Dr. Cesar Maldonado. She oversees the Digital and Information Technology and Manufacturing Centers of Excellence (COE) as well as all services and programs at Southwest College.

“My guiding principles as an educational leader in the millennium include a commitment to innovation, diversity and respect,” Dr. Burillo said. “I make the point to interact with students, visit with employers, foster partnerships with industry in our programs, and look for ways to expedite and enhance student success opportunities. The power of education is its transformative influence to change people life’s and a conduit to making dreams come true.”

Dr. Burillo started as a receptionist in a college financial aid office and worked her way up to the position of financial aid director. Her diligence propelled her to the top of the education field.  She has held multiple administrative positions in higher education, including Financial Aid Counselor at Oklahoma State University, Vice President of Corporate Training at Skills Enhancement Training Center, Associate Vice Chancellor of Workforce for HCC and most recently the HCC Southwest Interim President.

Houston Woman Magazine subscribers nominated the honorees on the “50 Women” list. The staff of the publication then selected the final top 50 honorees.
