HCC Partners in Education with Missouri City
May 5, 2016
Building dreams and building futures remains a top priority for Houston Community College. As HCC continues to grow, another momentous chapter was written. HCC officials, trustees, students along with the City of Missouri City mayor, elected officials, business leaders and Fort Bend County leaders held an official ground-breaking ceremony for the newest campus.
The $21 million, 69,000 square-foot facility will be home to The Center for Entrepreneurship, Technology & Health. It is being relocated from Sienna Plantation to Texas Parkway. The campus is expected to open Fall 2017.
Neeta Sane, HCC Board of Trustees, District VII, has spearheaded the efforts for the construction of this campus. For her, this new educational facility, could not have a better location.
“We have to do everything we can to make sure our campuses are visibly, accessible and affordable to the community we serve," said Sane.
“This location will fulfill that purpose and this is the most important aspect of this new campus.”
Missouri City was recently ranked as one of America’s 50 best cities to live. As for Fort Bend County, Forbes Magazine indicates that the county has seen a population growth of just over 7 percent over the past five years, which makes it one of the top ten fastest growing large counties.
For HCC Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, coming together to partner with the City of Missouri City and Fort Bend County is crucial.
“Together we are strong,” he said, “Together we are building a highly responsive college education to all those who live in this area. The high demands of the careers we will be teaching here in addition to the stellar level of academics are all going to be a great asset to this community”.
The new campus will offer a variety of programs to get students trained in healthcare and logistics industries. Core classes such as math, English, government, chemistry, and biology will also be offered at the Missouri City campus. Board Chair Dr. Adriana Tamez is excited about the new campus.
“We are committed to partnerships like this, committed to make sure we are visible and strong, and to make sure we have the resources that our faculty, our staff and student need to be successful,” said Tamez.
Accessibility Is another important aspect. Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen is in talks with METRO to create a bus route that will stop in front of the new campus.
“Now that HCC campus is here, I feel it is important to get them involved and provide bus service to the campus,” said Owen.
“Location does matter,” said Grady Prestage, Fort Bend County Commissioner District 2. “The new campus location is great. It is in the epicenter of Missouri City and provides more accessibility to the community. “
The new building will be energy efficient, constructed with sustainable methods and will meet LEED Silver Certification requirements which is one of the highest international construction standards focused on preserving the environment and maintaining energy efficient practices.
