HCC Kitchen and Bath program receives national recognition

Real estate experts will tell you - when it comes to buying a home, well-designed kitchens and bathrooms will seal the deal. Houston Community College (HCC) is the only institution in Texas that trains students to receive a professional certificate in Kitchen and Bath design.
“What separates our students from other interior design programs is that our graduates have the most technical advanced skills of any other two or four-year programs,” said Professor Shasta Beveridge, associate chair, HCC Consumer Arts & Sciences Center of Excellence.
The program, which takes 24 months to complete, has been recognized with Supported Status by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) for excellence in the curriculum.
Beveridge believes that it takes a special set of skills to work in the kitchen and bath industry.
“You need to master the software components of heating, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical considerations,” she said.
HCC graduate and kitchen and bath designer Melissa Sharp says there is a great demand for experts in the field of kitchen and bath design.
“Kitchens and bathrooms are critical to homeowners and developers because that’s what really sells the house. Both of these rooms are dominant factors when decisions are made to change an old property,” she added.
The Kitchen and Bath Design Professional Certificate program is accepting new students and has plenty of spaces for those interested in becoming interior designers. The profession has a nearly 100 percent placement rate. The program includes an internship as well as network opportunities with industry partners.
“I recommend HCC because it is affordable, and you will get an education that completely transforms a space and bring happiness to those will inhabit it.” said Sharp.
