The Houston Community College (HCC) Omega Sigma Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is getting global recognition for its excellent work.
At the recent “Nerd Nation 2016” International convention for Phi Theta Kappa in Washington, D.C., the HCC Omega Sigma Chapter took home several awards based on their Honors in Action research project, which focused on the theme of Health and Medicine as Frontiers. Students researched how the excessive use of social media affects users physically, emotionally, and socially. During this process, the group organized a symposium and created a trifold to create awareness of the problem. The awards received include:
• Distinguished Honors in Action Project
• Distinguished Honors in Action Theme
• Distinguished Chapter
• Seventh Most Distinguished Chapter in the world
“It was rewarding to see that the work, time and energy our chapter put into these projects was recognized on a worldwide level,” said Angie Chacko, HCC student and chapter officer.
Based on the accomplishments in the honors in action project and college project, which is another initiative of the chapter to improve student success at the college through study sessions before midterm and final, the Omega Sigma Chapter at HCC now ranks seventh out of the 1,285 chapters of Phi Theta Kappa.
“Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is a life changing experience for the students,” said Professor Eunice Kallarackal, one of the six advisors of the chapter. “Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunity for developing leadership, scholarship, service and stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”
