HCC Digital Gaming and Simulation showcase draws industry professionals

Jun 10, 2016

The Houston Community College (HCC) West Loop Campus Auditorium was buzzing with creative projects by students who hope to land jobs in the gaming industry. The Digital and Information Technology Center of Excellence put their portfolios and demo reels on display at the Annual Spring Showcase.

The Digital Gaming and Simulation graduates demonstrated their class projects for various industry professionals, the community, and their families. The semi-annual event allows students to showcase both individual and group projects, while businesses get the opportunity to interview talented prospects and potentially hire them on the spot.

“Our degree plans are in Digital Gaming for artists and Digital Gaming for programmers,” Dr. Reni Abraham, Digital Gaming and Simulation Program Coordinator said. “We train both artists and programmers which are the two vital components in putting a game together.”

Students in the Game Artists program develop skills in animation, illustrations, graphic design, layout, and interface design in the development of games. Students in the Game Programming track are trained in design, programming, performance diagnostics, optimization, and game libraries in the development of games.

The artists and programmers work in teams throughout each semester to develop games as a requirement for completing their degree. Students are also trained in using the most updated hardware and software used in the Gaming and Simulation industry, which helps HCC graduates to land a job because they have the skillset the industry needs.
