HCC Digital Gaming and Simulation at the GameCon

What’s more fun than hanging out on a Saturday afternoon playing with toys? Nothing! Faculty members from the Houston Community College (HCC) Digital Gaming and Simulation (DGS) Department recently participated in the TheGameCon, a premiere gaming convention, at the Galveston Convention Center. Thousands of event goers got the opportunity to experience high-tech toys up close and personal thanks to HCC staff members who demonstrated everything from 3D printing to the Van Der Graff generator.

The HCC 40' x 40' booth was divided into three different sections, including: Demonstration, The Experience, and Virtual Reality. Individuals were able to move from each section to learn more about the latest software and hardware tools used in HCC DGS program. They also received hands-on demonstrations with the equipment for game development and simulation.

The Experience showed event goers how to create a model by using Zbrush (virtual sculpting/modeling software) with the Wacom drawing tablet and the mouse. It drew the most attention at the HCC exhibit.

"The Digital Gaming and Simulation program at HCC continues to be the best kept secret in town, even after 11 years of existence,” said Dr. Reni Abraham, Digital Gaming and Simulation Department Program Coordinator. “Having a booth at TheGameCon gives the faculty an opportunity to promote the program to Houstonians and individuals passionate about gaming from suburbia and hopefully entice them to want to take classes and learn more about gaming.”

The two-day event drew about 4,000 attendees. Thanks to the HCC Digital Gaming and Simulation booth, several of the event goers say they are ready to enroll in HCC DGS program after an interactive and informative visit. Even current HCC students who attended the event made comments about exploring the option of transferring into the program.
