HCC and Consulate General of Mexico: A powerful alliance

Smiles, handshakes, and enthusiasm were in abundance as officials from Houston Community College (HCC) and the Consulate General of Mexico in Houston joined forces for an event that marked the beginning of new educational opportunities for countless students.

“This ceremony has great symbolism for the future of our partnerships, the future of our countries and the future of Texas and Mexico’s economies,” said Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC chancellor.

The ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Chancellor Maldonado and Consul General Oscar Rodriguez Cabrera means the continuous presence of HCC at the Consulate General of Mexico in Houston through the program ”Window of Educational Opportunities”.

“Mexican nationals,” said Rodriguez Cabrera, “need to have the knowledge about educational options that Houston Community College offers. HCC is the best institution to promote and to invite everyone to participate.”

The signing of the document was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony of the HCC Office of Educational Opportunities. Alda Martinez Falcon, HCC academic advisor will assist individuals who are interested in obtaining their General Education Degree (GED), English as a Second Language classes (ESL), as well as associate degrees and workforce certificates. Martinez, who is bilingual, could not be more excited.

“It is an honor and a privilege that I was the one selected to represent HCC,” she said. “Our institution is devoted to the community and through this office we will bring the information needed for Mexican students to continue with their education.”

The “Window of Educational Opportunities” will operate Mondays and Fridays.
