HCC adds Interior Design classes to West Loop Campus

Look all around Houston and surrounding areas and you will see apartment complexes and new homes being constructed; older homes undergoing renovations. You can capitalize on this property growth by enrolling in the new Interior Design classes at the Houston Community College West Loop Campus.
“Interior design is an exciting and challenging field. It is a combination of technical expertise and aesthetics,” Interior Design Professor Shasta Swift said. “Designers truly have the ability to impact our interior environments, shaping the way we use, feel and see the world around us. This is what makes interior design such a wonderful career path.”
The bustling economy in Houston supports the growing field of interior design. Students who complete the HCC Award-winning Interior Design program are prepared for entry level positions in a variety of design related career fields, including residential design, commercial design, kitchen and bath design, architectural firms, wholesale design trades, and furniture stores. Many students also begin their own design businesses upon graduation.
HCC Southwest Interim President Dr. Madeline Burillo is excited to collaborate with the HCC Center for Excellence in Consumer Arts, located at the Central campus, to expand the Interior Design program to the Southwest community. The West Loop Campus is a perfect location to add these types of classes given its proximity to the trendy Galleria area and upscale neighborhoods like West University, Bellaire and River Oaks right in the campuses backyard. These locations are teaming with design firms looking to hire new talent and hundreds of other businesses hoping to make a good first impression.
“Interior design plays the key role in a building’s functionality by improving efficiency in use of space. It’s an essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal. Research has shown that proper design can make a difference in functionality, work flow and impact employee productivity and retention,” Dr. Burillo said. “With the continual demand for homes and office space in the Houston Southwest area, demand for interior design skills continues to increase.”
