Fall 2016 Newsletter from Trustee Zeph Capo
Nov 10, 2016
Dear Neighbors,
As a longtime proponent of public education, I am excited to be a member of the Houston Community College Board of Trustees at this critical juncture in our history. As your representative for District 1, it is my duty to inform you of the work we’ve done to get us to this point, which involved many hours dedicated to workshops and planning sessions. All of this preparation has equipped HCC to move things forward to become an exceptional institution.
- Houston Community College continues to be number one among the 1,905 community colleges in awarding associate degrees to all minorities and number one in awarding associate degrees in liberal arts, according to Community College Week “Top 100 Colleges” report. HCC has also jumped from fourth to second in the total number of associate degrees awarded.
- The brand new North Houston Early College High School (EHCS) is open. Located on the HCC Northline Campus, the building is a result of a successful partnership with the Houston Independent School District (HISD), made possible through a grant created by HCC. Through our Dual Credit Program, students have the opportunity to graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree.
- Full and part-time HCC students who use METRO to get to class can now ride the bus and rail line at a 50 percent discount. HCC and METRO are offering a Student METRO Q Fare Card which can be picked up at student services offices on campus.
- The HCC Procurement Small Business Development Program recently held an event at our Pinemont Campus to provide small business owners information about becoming vendors with HCC and how they learn to grow their businesses through education and training. The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program has graduated 453 entrepreneurs since the program started at HCC in 2011.
HCC plays a very important role in the community by training Houston’s workforce to compete in today’s global market place. By building a solid culture based on the tenets of HCC FORWARD, HCC will continue to enrich the curriculum to produce better trained students for the benefit of all.
Thank you for your continuous support of our mission, which is to provide high quality, innovative education leading to student success and completion of workforce and academic programs.
We are Houston’s Community College.
In service,
Zeph Capo
