City of Houston pays tribute to HCC instructor Tom Tynan
Dec 16, 2016
When Tom Tynan came to Houston more than 30 years ago, he never thought this city would become his home. He didn’t envision that his work and passion would impact lives. Besides his position as Director of Construction Trades in the School of Continuing Education at Houston Community College (HCC), Tynan has been a constant presence on the Houston airwaves in numerous home improvement radio and television programs.
“When I came to Houston I had nothing and Houston gave me everything. Because of my work at HCC, I got a broadcasting career and I could not be more proud of how the community has embraced what we do,” said Tynan, who answers questions from concerned builders and homeowners on a weekly basis.
His commitment to education, community service, and information was recently recognized with a proclamation from the City of Houston in a ceremony spearheaded by Council Member Mike Knox. The proclamation makes Saturday, December 17, 2016 as Tom Tynan Day.
“I invited Tom up for a proclamation for 30 years of helping folks fix little things around their home that add up to big annoyances if left untreated. It amazes me how quickly Tom diagnoses a problem and offers a remedy,” Knox said. “I can only imagine how many zillions of dollars homeowners have saved by simply listening to Tom Tynan and following his advice. “
Charlie Moger, whose company produces and distributes Tynan’s radio and television shows, describes what he considers is the main ingredient for the success of the show.
“Tom answers the questions from viewers and listeners concisely. He does it in an entertaining way but most importantly, he speaks to you in the way a neighbor would,” Moger said.
Tynan chuckles as he recognizes that listeners have actually grown up listening to his advice.
“What I am finding now is that, after 30 years, I’m getting a second and third generation of listeners,” Tynan said. “I have people who tell me that they had to listen to me on the radio on Saturday when they were driving with their fathers. At the time, they did not know how they would put that information to use, but now they have their own homes.”
Tynan does not want to reminisce on the past too much. There is still plenty of room in the future for the HCC programs he helps mold, as well as for the broadcast adventures that are yet to come.
“The fact that I can thank people for embracing the show and embracing my values is really nice.”
You can listen to “Home Show with Tom Tynan” every Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sports Radio 610. To learn about the programs offered in the HCC School of Continuing Education, visit hccs.edu/ce.
