Arena Energy provides support to help HCC VAST students gain independence

Aug 22, 2016

A former Houston Community (HCC) College VAST Academy student served as the inspiration behind a generous donation to the HCC Foundation.

During the August meeting of the HCC Board of Trustees, the Arena Energy Foundation presented a check for $10,000 to support students in the VAST program. VAST, which stands for Vocational Advancement and Skills Training, has been helping students with intellectual or developmental disabilities transition into college life and independent living for more than 25 years.

“This gift will impact the lives of hundreds of students with special needs whose dreams of fulfilling their personal, professional, and academic potential depend on the services provided to them during critical times of change,” said Dr. Adriana Tamez, HCC Board of Trustees Chair.

Arena Energy Foundation board member and Tax Manager Ben Pigati praised HCC VAST Academy for preparing graduate Chris McManus to work at the oil and gas operator in a company pilot program.

“Several people were reluctant to hire Chris because they didn’t know if he could handle the challenge,” said Pigati. “Not only was Chris a great testament to VAST, but he was also a testament of what people with special needs can accomplish when given the opportunity. His performance paved the way for other special needs interns.”

This marks the second year of support received from the Arena Energy Foundation, with their gifts totaling $20,000 to date.

“We are so pleased to earn your committed support for these amazing students in the HCC VAST Academy, who benefit directly from your generosity,” said David Regenbaum, HCC Foundation Vice President. “We look forward to growing our partnership with Arena Energy and reporting on the successes of these students and the impact of your corporate giving.”
