HCC STEM Summer Camp students explore NASA

Jul 30, 2015

Students in the Houston Community College Governors Merit STEM Summer program came face to face with some of the brightest engineers and scientists in America. The 10th and 11th grade students spent the day with their heroes at the Johnson Space Center.

Sandeev Yayathi, a NASA robotic engineer, explained the ins and outs of Robonaut 2, a humanoid robot designed to help astronauts at the International Space Station. The massive boosters used to launch space shuttles into orbit were available for students to get unique view of the amount of propulsion needed for NASA missions.

Students also spoke with NASA Aerospace Engineer Lebrarian Stokes as he shared his passion to spark their interests.

“The purpose of this tour was to stimulate students in the areas of science and mathematics,” Stokes said. “It was also used to show how science is used in the real world and can help benefit the human race.”
