HCC sponsors new competition for women

No one understands women’s issues better than a woman. Combine those issues with innovation and you have the makings of a new competition called InnovateHER 2016. Houston Community College and the City of Houston Office of Business Opportunity are the local sponsors of this national initiative through the Small Business Administration (SBA).

“The InnovateHER Competition is a phenomenal opportunity for a woman who has developed an idea for a product or service that has the potential to impact many women and families,” said Dr. Maya Durnovo, chief entrepreneurial officer, HCC Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives. “The competition provides assistance with the development of a winning Business Plan and the finalists can potentially win $40,000. HCC is excited to support this wonderful competition.”

The competition is open to any woman (at least 18 yrs. of age). Contestants must develop a product or service that meets the following challenge criteria:

• Has a measurable impact on the lives of women and families

• Has the potential for commercialization

• Fills a need in the marketplace

“HCC committed to be a host location for the SBA’s InnovateHER competition, but they haven’t stopped there,” said Tim Jeffcoat, district director, Houston SBA. “They are also providing valuable free classes to help participants prepare for the competition. We are delighted that our partnership with HCC continues to produce exciting and innovative assistance to the Entrepreneurs of Houston.”

• Competition Opens: October 9 (Contestants must submit a Full Business Plan outlining a product or service).

• Competition Closes: November 16 at 5 p.m. CST

HCC is providing free training sessions to help women develop their Business Plan. Registration for the training sessions is required. Training sessions will be held 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 5 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 10 a the HCC West Loop Campus, 5601 West Loop South, Houston, TX 77081.
