HCC recognizes Board of Trustees
Dec 18, 2015
Houston Community College (HCC) celebrated the accomplishments of Trustee Sandie Mullins during a special ceremony at the December meeting of the HCC Board of Trustees. Mullins, who represented District VI, served on the board for six years.
“It has been my pleasure to serve as District VI Trustee and I took my commitment seriously,” said Mullins. “My position has always been about getting students graduated within a reasonable budget and taking care of the taxpayers.”
Mullins’ last day as HCC Trustee is December 31. Dr. John P. Hansen will take office as Trustee for HCC District VI on January 4. He served on the board of the Alief Independent School District for 22 years.
“I am hoping to be a constructive part of taking the college from where it was when the chancellor came in to where we would like to be,” said Dr. Hansen. “It’s about the organization succeeding and the education of students.”
Voters recently chose to keep two HCC trustees in their districts. Trustee Dr. Adriana Tamez will continue to serve District III and Trustee Eva Loredo will continue to serve District VIII. Both won by wide margins against their challengers. Dr. Tamez, who took 68% of the vote over Florida “Flo” Cooper, is humbled with the voters’ decision.
“Being re-elected is quite exciting and a wonderful reminder of the responsibilities entrusted to me by the community,” said Dr. Tamez. “I am honored and delighted to be able to continue the exciting and historical work taking place at HCC on behalf of our great city and the surrounding areas.”
Loredo won 67% of the vote over opponent Art Aguilar.
“Thanks to all my friends and supporters for re-electing me to Houston Community College,” said Loredo. “As a lifelong educator, I am proud to serve in a capacity that supports quality higher education. HCC provides a great start for thousands of students as they prepare to enter the Houston workforce.”
Dr. Hansen and Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz ran on the ballot unopposed. Dr. Evans-Shabazz, a former HCC student, has represented District IV since May.
“The community realizes the jewel that they have in Houston Community College and the many opportunities that are present to increase the economics and the workforce of this city and beyond,” said Dr. Evans-Shabazz.
