HCC Interior Design students win scholarships

Two Houston Community College Interior Design students were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship at the annual NEWH, The Hospitality Industry Network, Houston Chapter Student Scholarship Dinner. Magdalena Pamula and Rebecca Grotte (both center of photo) competed with students from other colleges across Texas and Louisiana.

“The NEWH scholarship will be an important help in pursuing my goals as I'm excited about finishing my studies and starting a career in interior design,” Pamula said. “Being recognized at the award gala and the ability to meet professionals from the industry was a great experience that gave me a lot of inspiration for the future.”

Students who qualify for the scholarship study in the fields of Architecture, Interior Design, Hotel and Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts. Pamula and Grotte were the only winners from a two-year college.

“This speaks volumes about the quality of our work at HCC,” said Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC chancellor. “We are proud to have been the only community college included in this recognition.”

“Being a recipient of the NEWH Scholarship affords me the ability to continue to take the classes necessary to become an interior designer, which is my career goal,” Grotte said. “I am incredibly grateful to NEWH for their generosity, for this experience has been truly humbling.”

NEWH is an international non-profit organization with a mission to raise scholarship funds for deserving students pursuing careers in the hospitality industry in areas of Interior Design, Architecture, Culinary Arts and Hotel and Restaurant Management.

HCC currently has articulation agreements with the Interior Design Programs at Stephen F. Austin State University, Sam Houston State University and Art Institute of Houston. For more information on the Interior Design Program at HCC, go to hccs.edu.
