HCC Gulfton Middle College inspires students

Nov 14, 2015

The Middle College High School at the Houston Community College Gulfton Campus has proven to be a success. The program started in Fall 2014 with 135 students from freshman to seniors. This high school partners with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to help at-risk students achieve a high school diploma.

The first class graduated in May 2015 and sent valedictorian, Cindy Flores, to the University of Houston on full ride scholarship. As it welcomes new students with dreams of continuing their education, the Gulfton Middle College High School looks for ways to encourage its youth.  A pep rally, called “The Hero in You,” recently took place with the goal of inspiring and urging students to stay focused and keep pushing towards their goals.

“Our bar association is involved with helping students of all levels be successful and to find their path in life – to help navigate it,” Robert Maldonado, president of the Hispanic National Bar Association said. “So it’s our privilege to talk to this group of people and inspire them to be successful and stay in school.”

Maldonado, the keynote speaker, set the stage for other guests who included Tino Chapa from the Houston Anti-Gang Office and two Houston Dynamo Cheerleaders.
