HCC celebrates veteran graduates and recipients of Houston Texans Scholarships for Service Awards

Houston Community College honored 2014-15 veteran graduates and recipients of the Houston Texans Scholarships for Service Awards with a ceremony on Wednesday night at Hotel ZaZa.

Texans ambassador JJ Moses, who played for the team during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, was on hand to meet and greet the veterans along with HCC Chancellor Dr. Cesar Maldonado and HCC Board of Trustee members Dr. Adriana Tamez and Eva Laredo.

The Scholarships for Service program provides scholarships for veterans through a partnership between the HCC Foundation and the Texans. HCC is the Official Education Partner of Houston’s NFL team. 

The funds received from the Texans for the Scholarships for Service program aid HCC in improving services for our veterans by assisting students with the resources and tools necessary to be successful as they transition from military life to student life. The HCC Veterans Affairs is committed to providing useful tools and resources to help veterans achieve academic success. Generous contributions are what keep HCC Veterans students on their feet and moving forward in their career.

In order for veterans to receive the $1,000 scholarship award they must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, complete an online application, write an essay and attend a recognition event held by the HCC Foundation and an event held by the donor. The recipients can put the funds towards tuition and books. The students are also part of the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), which offers up to 12 months of assistance to veterans who are currently unemployed and provides the necessary training and education for high demand occupations. Students also receive VRAP Educational Benefits throughout the fall and spring semesters.
