Oct 20, 2014
Representatives from Houston Community College recently attended the annual National Association of Community College Entrepreneurs (NACCE) in Phoenix, Arizona.
NACCE helps community colleges across the country learn how to link their traditional role of workforce development with entrepreneurial development.
Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC chancellor and Dr. Maya Durnovo, chief entrepreneurial initiatives officer, presented on behalf of HCC. They discussed the importance of embedding innovation and creativity in a college setting.
“Our Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives team came away with valuable information to help our clients be more successful,” said Dr. Durnovo.
Marilyn Harris, an HCC graduate, was one of three recipients of the NACCE 2014 Alumni Entrepreneur Award. As the executive director of the Women Veterans Business Center in Houston, Ms. Harris launched a business in 2010 to support the unmet needs of Houston's 30,000 plus women veterans. To date, the Women Veterans Business Center has touched the lives of over 7,200 women veterans and their families. She also gives back by teaching entrepreneurship at her alma mater.
Harris was also recognized for her achievement at the October meeting of the Houston Community College Board of Trustees.
