HCC Hispanic Scholarship Council hosts luncheon to raise scholarship funds for students

Houston Community College hosted the third annual HCC Hispanic Scholarship Committee (HSC) Luncheon Tuesday, October 8 at the Hilton Americas downtown Houston. The luncheon helped HSC to raise more than $60,000 for scholarships for Hispanic students interested in HCC. Honored at the luncheon with the Hispanic Scholarship Council Leadership Award were Irma G. Galvan, owner of Irma’s Restaurant, and Richard J. Campo, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Camden Property Trust.

Galvan was born in Brownsville, Texas and moved to Houston at the age of five. After the loss of her husband, she opened a small sandwich shop to support her four children, which has now grown into Irma’s Restaurant through the help of local designers, decorators and real estate agents. Though Galvan never had the opportunity to receive her degree, she strongly supports today’s children and their quest for education.

Campo graduated from Oregon State University in 1976 and has spent 30 years building Camden’s predecessor companies and providing job opportunities for skilled workers in Houston. He also currently the chairman of the 2017 Super Bowl Bid Committee and was a past Board Member of the Harris County Houston Sports Authority which developed and financed the three major sports venues in Houston.

Trustees Eva Loredo, District 8, Yolanda Navarro Flores, District 1, Herlinda Garcia, District 3 and HCC’s Interim Chancellor, Renee Byas were in attendance. Cynthia Cisneros, Vice President of Community Affairs for KTRK-TV, Channel 13 served as MC for the event.
